During the month of September we continue our remembrance of the tragic events that unfolded on September 11, 2001 in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania.
Even before those events, public safety officials in Allen County were preparing to respond to the unthinkable use of "Weapons of Mass Destruction" against our citizens by a terrorist organization.
Since 9/11 the dedication of your public safety community has only intensified. Last October and for the next six months, Lima and Allen County served as home to a major fight in the war against terrorism in the form of the irradiation of possible anthrax tainted mail from the nation's capitol. Our community answered her call, our mission was a success and nearly 150 semi-truckloads of mail were safely treated here and returned to The White House and the Capital in Washington, D.C.
Even today, first responders from law enforcement, fire, EMS, public health, emergency management, and public works continue to train so that we are more prepared tomorrow than we are today should the unthinkable happen here.
It is important that every citizen do his and her part to keep our homeland safe. If you see something unusual, REPORT IT! If you here something suspicious, REPORT IT! And accept the President's challenge to become involved, VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME to help others and make our country strong.
